If You Really Must Use Soap…
We have already established that you don’t really need to use soap on your skin, especially not the drug store stuff. However, if for whatever reason you feel the need to wash your face with soap - maybe it’s a particularly hot and sweaty day or you dig ditches for a living - there are a few products that are better than others. Try these for starters…
African Formula Acne Care
This product is available from Penn Herb Company, and cleanses the skin gently without stripping the natural oils. The ingredients are pronounceable for the most part: Zinc Oxide (3%), Colloidal Sulfur (0.25%), Triclosan (0.25%). OTHER INGREDIENTS: Purified Water; Liquid Black Soap; Oatmeal; Extracts of Spearmint, Peppermint, Comfrey and Burdock Roots; Papaya; Golden Seal; Bee Honey; Wheat Germ Oil; Sea Kelp; Alfalfa; Camphor Oil; Pine Oil; Panthenol; Lecithin; Vitamins A, B1, B3, B5, C & E. The consistency is very weird, sort of lumpy, wet and dark brown. It smells good though, probably mostly thanks to the camphor and pine oils. It’s a bit expensive at $9.95 for 2 ounces, but it lasts awhile.
Oatmeal Milk & Honey Soap
This blend from S&K Handmade Soaps is great for acne sufferers. It provides just the right balance of moisture and cleansing power. The Calendula soap is also very good, but seems to be out of stock more often than the Oatmeal. These soaps are cheaper, at $4 for a for ounce bar.
Just as you shouldn’t exfoliate every day, you also shouldn’t wash your face with soap every day if you are going to do it at all. It can be a nice refresher for your skin that is a bit lighter than exfoliating.
